Playing Dirty

Today I’m climbing my soap box and denouncing what I call ‘playing dirty’.

I’ll start out with telling you the last time THIS happened to me. I got sucked into a conversation with someone who tends to be fairly liberal. I don’t remember exactly what the conversation was about, though I wouldn’t be surprised if we’d been discussing immigration. Suffice it to say that I’m fairly conservative on many issues and we obviously had differing viewpoints.

I listened politely to his viewpoint and waited until he was had finished his thought. As I opened my mouth to start talking, he turned to the other person in the room and basically dismissed me without allowing me to give my opinion. I was extremely angry because I thought it was a dirty way of expressing his opinion: he could take 5 minutes to tell me his thoughts, but I wasn’t allowed 5 seconds to express mine.

If you don’t want to discuss a topic, then don’t make me listen to your thoughts and feelings without allowing me to tell you mine.

That’s what I call Playing Dirty.

So when I searched for the clip of Heather Armstrong (Dooce) being interviewed on the Today show (you can watch the clip HERE), the last thing I expected to see was someone Playing Dirty. BUT THEY DID. At the end of the interview, after talking about ‘mommy blogs’ and how Heather blogs about her daughter, one of the interview ladies (apparently Kathie Lee Gifford…I’m so out of touch with who’s who that I wouldn’t know Kathie Lee if she came and asked me for an interview) said:

It’s an interesting subject. I have mixed emotions about it. I have to be honest with you. You seem like a lovely lady, but the privacy…

[Heather Armstrong] Hahaha…What are you about to say? Hahaha.

[KL] …no no no, I’m not going to make any judgment at all, I’m just saying there’s something that worries me about it…I don’t know enough about computers, obviously. I just know about the fears I have about computers.

[other host] Right, and just like the sort of safety issue of putting kids…

[HA]: Do you have fears about people walking…I mean you live in New York City, how…

[KL] No I don’t! See, gotcha!

Unintelligible talking over each other

[other host] Thank you so much, it was great meeting you, too.

And that’s how it ended. It’s like, I’m going to tell you that I don’t like what you do, but I’m not going to give you a chance to defend yourself. I’m not listening! *fingers stuck in ears* Lalalalalala….MWAHHH!!

GRRR!! People who don’t allow other opinions to be spoken are LAME.

This is a subject that irritates me so much that I can’t even properly rant about it! GAH! So instead of wondering what I’M rambling about, check out this other person blogging about this Dooce and Kathie Lee episode. She’s more eloquent than I am, as are the people who left comments.

And apparently Kathie Lee has pimped out her own kids to the betterment of her career and she’s criticizing Dooce? What an effing hypocrite.

Nightline did a way better piece on the subject of “mommy blogs”. Check it out HERE.

Kathy Lee! Oh, she annoys me. I haven’t watched Today since she came on. She has a BIG mouth. And yes, she pimped out those kids when she was on Regis. I can’t believe she’s back on TV.

This is the opinion of Chris and is not affiliated with Trish…Lol! I know some people LOVE her but sorry, not me.

I so completely know how you feel!!! Although I must say that for me, it’s worse when the other person lets you get just enough of your thoughts out to realize that he/she disagrees with you, THEN shuts you down.

ugh! I hate it when people do that! I love debating issues even when I disagree vehemently with the other person but it must be civil and fair.

I am astounded Kathy Lee is still on television–have you ever met anyone who likes her?

Regardless of the discussion topic, I have found that many people are so busy thinking of what they want to say next that they aren’t really listening at all to what the other person has to say and really aren’t interested in hearing other people’s opinions unless they are the same as their own. That isn’t exactly what you are ranting about, but it came to mind as I read your post.

Even when people disagree, I think we can learn something from each other if we take the time to listen to the other side. Maybe it will just make our own opinion stronger or it could possibly make us question our own position a little bit more than we might have otherwise.

I’m preaching to the choir here, I know. 🙂 All this to say, I share your rant!

That’s so annoying when people want to “debate” but won’t hear another opinion. I personally love a good debate. I have fond memories in high school of debating all sorts of topics very heatedly with my buddies. Definitely miss it!

I don’t get it. I thought the segment was OK. Could you really care that much about what any of us thought?
