Portland anyone?
A few bloggers are going to do a Portland weekend. It’s mostly bloggers already in the area, but a few of us are traveling so we can see Portland (okay, for me, it’s mostly so I can see Powell’s) and meet up with other bloggers.
Date? August 21st and 22nd.
On August 21st we’ll be having dinner somewhere together. I have to admit, I’m a little nervous because it looks like we’ll be going someplace that doesn’t have hamburgers (which is a great standby food), but I’ve decided I’m going to be ADVENTUROUS and not even voice any of my food issues. I’m going to rely on those who really like that kind of food to steer us in the right direction, and then to recommend things to me that a newbie would like.
With all of my food issues, you’d never know I’ve worked in restaurants for TEN YEARS and have actually tried quite a few things, but it’s mostly been “American” food.
On Saturday we’re going to tour the Portland library’s rare book room, which I’m SO EXCITED about. Some of the books I’ll get to see include first editions of Little Women and The Wizard of Oz and Beatrix Potter books. How much will I geek out? A LOT.
We’re also going to meet up with a couple of local Portland authors. So far, we’ve confirmed we’ll be meeting with Molly Gloss, which I’m really excited about!
Some of the people who will be coming include:
- Me! (dur)
- Wendy from Caribousmom
- Bethany from Dreadlock Girl Reads
- Gabe from Reading Local: Portland
- Gilion from Rose City Reader
- Ali from Worducopia
- SuziQOregon from Whimpulsive
- Teddy Rose from So Many Precious Books, So Little Time
You’re more than welcome to join us, but if you can’t, we’ll try to have fun without you. ![]()

You and me we’re going to fit right in together in NYC. I have multitudes of food issues. American is my style and hambergers are a fabulous standby. Eclectic is not my thing!
Have a great time in Portland, it sounds like fabulous fun

I WANT TO SEE RARE BOOKS.
Also, I was in an old library once in a far away country and I was apparently the only one who had been interested in seeing it in a long time and the woman at the desk begrudgingly lead me into the room and then glared at me for the few minutes I could stand it before I had to get out. It was so beautiful. I wanted to rub my face on all the old, dusty books even though they were behind chicken wire.

Sounds like so much fun!!!!!
Somehow I kept missing out on the mailing lists for this, but I don’t think I would have had the money anyway.

Honestly, the thing about the hamburgers really made me laugh. And it sounds like a great weekend. Makes me feel a little homesick though (lived in Eugene, Oregon for many, many years)!

Oh, this sounds like such fun – I wish Kansas was closer to Oregon!
On a positive note, however, my daughter is talking of going to college in Portland. While I was initially sad at this long-distance choice (which is still two years away), I now realize that I might finally have an opportunity to visit the famous Powell’s bookstore in person

Sometimes you just can’t beat a good hamburger but I’m sure you’ll find something. It’s funny but I used to not be an adventurous eater AT ALL. And now I’m amazed at the different things I LOVE.

Trish: You have won a book (ANY BOOK) from my Librarything shelf. Your step-by-step instructions on how to add a favicon were simple, self explanatory…and it worked. It only took me 10 minutes tops….I wish I had found your post yesterday.
Please stop by my blog and click on my Librarything icon.
Have a great day!

I’m really looking forward to meeting folks. I’ll miss the Friday dinner and Library outing due to obligations for The Hubster’s company events, but really hope to meet up somewhere for dinner on Saturday.

Wow, sounds like a great time! I look forward to hearing how it all turns out. I was recently in Seattle and did a tour of a few bookstores. I’ love to see Powell’s in Portland (it’s on my “bucket list”) and look forward to hearing what you think about it.

If you don’t like any of the food at whatever restaurant we pick on Friday, I’ll take you to get a great hamburger. Saturday you’re on your own because I have another engagement that night, but I’ll point you in the right direction.

How fun! I would totally geek out at seeing a first edition of Little Women. I still have my ancient, battered copy, and I cherish it. When I went to NY to meet with publishers, a highlight was seeing the first editions of books displayed in the buildings’ lobbies — including To Kill A Mockingbird. I think I just stood there, gaping, perhaps even drooling a bit!

Girlfriend, why didn’t you mention that you needed restaurant recommendations? 21st Avenue, about a mile from Powell’s, has at least a dozen great restaurants. All of the McMenamin’s locations have great burgers, and they’re all worth seeing because each one is decorated differently. They’re also open really late. I believe there are no fewer than five right near Powell’s.
Also don’t forget Voodoo Donut, though it’s in the opposite direction.
