Official Mockingjay 13 District Blog Tour: District 6
Welcome to District 6! Come in! Come in! Rest your feet while I tell you a little bit about your host today.
District 6 hasn’t been discussed much in either The Hunger Games or Catching Fire, but we’re not without our fame! We were the district that had the tribute that went savage during one of the hunger games and started eating the hearts of other tributes he killed. I know that’s a little extreme, and I can’t say we were proud, but he didn’t end up winning because he was killed in an avalanche. Half of our district is relieved that he died, the other half is angry because we certainly could have used the gifts and food that Panem lavishes on the winner’s district! We all agree, though, that the avalanche was no doubt manufactured by the Gamemakers. Having a lunatic win The Hunger Games would have made a mockery of what they are.
*cough*
Admittedly, this cannibal is probably what we’re most famous for in The Hunger Games, but we’ve done our fair share of trying to keep Katniss and Peeta alive! Both of our morphlings gave their lives for Katniss and Peeta. I hope those two live up to what Haymitch said they would do, otherwise our morphling’s deaths will have been in vain.
I’m sure you’re wondering what we do here, since you know what some of the other districts specialize in. Unfortunately, it’s a secret and if I told you I’d have to kill you.
On to the topic at hand! If you think Katniss and Gale’s relationship is a secret, then you don’t understand the way word can spread here. I know, I know. Katniss and Peeta are shown together during the Games, but let me tell you why I love Gale, and why I think he’s better for Katniss:
1. Gale’s a survivor. Sure, I guess baking bread works if you have a roof over your head and a place to bake the bread, but with Gale you never have to worry about food, because he can hunt and gather.
2. Gale’s known Katniss for years and knows her better than just about anyone else, even if he didn’t fight in the Games with her.
3. Gale’s a scrapper. He hasn’t led the privileged life that Peeta has, which means he knows how to get by, and dare I say it? He has more character.
4. Gale can make Katniss smile and laugh when no one else can. Connections like that aren’t easily replaced or replicated. Men like Gale are few and far between.
5. Gale’s a man. He’s been taking care of his family for years, taking on the tessera and hunting and gathering in the woods.
And here’s who I’d cast for Gale (I know he’s a little old, but when has that ever stopped Hollywood?):

Ben Barnes. Aw yeah.
Gale has straight black hair, olive skin, and grey eyes. Obvs Benny needs a little work to make him Gale, but I don’t think he’s far off.
Team Gale!
Are you Team Gale or Team Peeta?
We in District 6 can’t wait to find out how this story ends. We are declaring August 24th a national holiday so that everyone can read Mockingjay. Will you be reading it with us?
And now for the giveaway!

I have 50 (FIFTY!) stickers to give away. *points up* Aren’t those cool? I’m so jealous of everyone who’ll win. I haven’t had a sticker in a long time, but I would LOVE this one! *dies*
All you have to do is fill out the form below with your name, mailing address, and email address by SATURDAY, AUGUST 21, 2010 at 11:59pm PT (the reason I’m getting your mailing address now is so that I don’t have to collect 50 addresses later. Once the winners are announced and a few weeks have gone by to ensure they’ve received their sticker, I will delete the form and all the entries.). I will announce the winners Sunday, August 22, 2010.
(On that Sunday, I will also be opening a contest that will be sponsored by me for a copy of Mockingjay. The contest will only run a few days so the winner can get Mockingjay as soon as possible. This contest will be open internationally.)
But back to this contest! This contest is only open to folks in the United States (sorry international folks!).
If you haven’t yet, please be sure to ‘like’ The Hunger Games on Facebook. (Shouldn’t Facebook have other options besides like? I would definitely click ‘obsesses over’ if that was an option.)
Also! The next stop on this totally rad tour is Monday, August 16 — District 7: Novel Novice.

Awesome stickers! I hope that golden arrow slips right into President Snow’s heart!

Oh, I’m Team Gale too and Ben Barnes is all kinds of yummy. He’s a good choice, if a little bit old.
You could have fun with those stickers – placing them in random public places so that anytime a HG fan came across one, they’d know they weren’t alone in the world (as if that were even possible!).

PEETA! I am sorry but I hate Gale. Peeta is a better friend and always makes Kantiss feel better when he is around. No, he isnt a hunter, but he does know how to survive and he respect the other people who aren’t as fortunate. And did I mention they SLEPT TOGETHER!! Oh yes. I am on team Peeta Forever
[Reply]
August 13th, 2010 at 7:40 am
I’m team Gale, but not quite so far in to his camp as you are. I still like and respect Peeta quite a lot. It’s not his fault that he and Gale were born into different circumstances. And it’s not like Peeta ever acted like being born into a wealthier family made him any better. He’s a humble person, despite the wealthy (ish) origins. I’m mostly on Gale’s team because I do think he and Katniss have a history that could not be overcome.

YAY GALE! I’ve been a Gale fan since the first time we met him. He is a man who can care for his family and he obviously has deeply cared for Katniss for years. And he has earned her trust and proven himself to be a good friend time and time again.
See one of the main reasons why I’m not Team Peeta is because if Katniss were to be with him she could never give him all of her heart. And I do love Peeta, he is really as Katniss and Finnick say “The Best of Them” and I think he deserves a girl who would be able to give him all of her. Not part. Because we know that part of Katniss will always be with Gale.
Plus, Gale is a born rebel bad boy robinhood hunk of gorgeous man meat. Ha! And when he kissed Katniss… that seemed like the very first time that a kiss actually meant something… YAY GALE!
[Reply]
August 13th, 2010 at 9:06 am
Team Gale!! I know Peeta survived the Hunger Games, and that makes him a bad-ass to some degree, but Peeta has always been too much of a “nice boy” for me. I like my MC’s dark and brooding and a little dangerous. lol. Peeta is just too nice.
[Reply]
August 13th, 2010 at 9:11 am
Team Gale! Everyone seems to just likes Peeta because he has been in most of the book. But! I think Mockingjay will have more of Peeta since he’ll be gone. Imagine Gale saving Peeta. I hope she ends up with Gale and not Peeta. I hope he ends up with Katniss and not Madge. Team Gale!

I keep going back and forth between Gail and Peeta. Yes, Gail is a man. He’s strong, a survivor, and would be perfect for Katniss, but Peeta really loves her (and he has since they were young). He’s not without skills and he could give her more because of his affluence. Now, if I have to choose and Binbons is Gail, well then there’s just no choice *swoon*!

Finally, a team Gale representative! Thank you! Not that I don’t love Peeta, but Katniss and Gale have a much deeper connection that didn’t need to be forced. I cannot tell you how excited I am for Mockingjay! Unfortunately, the day the book comes out is the first day of school for me. I think a little part of my soul died when I found out I couldn’t get it the day it came out. :*((

To be honest with you I was completely indecisive. The first book is when I definitely liked Peeta. He was so kind and Caring and I didn’t think that he got any credit for that. In the hunger games I saw a sort of bond form between katniss and Peeta. But then, what really got me was at the end when katniss told Peeta it was only to get supplies and it didn’t mean anything.
The next book is when they tell us that Gale and Katniss kissed, so then I started to lean toward Gale. I thought about it some more and realized gale would be better because he can hunt and take care of his family and we don’t really know what Peeta can do except make bread. But also, in the second book Peeta and Katniss kiss on the beach and as katniss describes it, it felt like the first time they kissed, not just a for show kind of kiss but a real heartfelt one.
In conclusion I am seriously confused on who I would pick and I am very excited to see what happens. I think I do favor Gale a bit over Peeta because he knows Katniss like no other, and personally thats who i would want.

While I do NOT agree with you about Gale being better for Katniss than Peeta, I will agree with Ben Barnes being a good Gale. I think all the actors should be older, there is a lot of emotion in the book and we need a mature actor who can pull it off. Besides, living in the seam is tough, I think kids have to grow up quick there.

Yay, shipping wars! My favorite! Seriously, though, I’m rereading and the more I do, the more I dislike Gale. “I’m going to sacrifice the guaranteed and immediate welfare of my family for my pride. Because in times like these, in a place like the Seam, obviously, endangering my life on a daily basis knowing full well that my family needs me rather than accept a bag of money from a girl is what’s most important.”

Gale all the way!! I like him because he’s not afraid to do what’s right, no matter the consequences (like being whipped). When something wrong is happening he does what he needs to fix the problem. He loves both his and Katniss’s family and is always looking out for them, making sure they are taken care of. Besides that, though, Gale is completely loyal to Katniss, and would never do anything to hurt her, and they like the same things (hunting illegaly & causing the Capitol problems). Peeta is too much of a good boy, trying to stay out of trouble. In Catching Fire, Katniss even says she would marry Peet if she had to, to save her loved ones (Gale & family). When she says that, she expresses reluctance. She loves Gale, and I think if she did marry Peeta there would always be the question “What if…” in her mind.

Peeta forever! <3
I think that Gale is a great friend to Katniss. And he is a great guy. But Peeta+Katniss are just chemistry. I notice most of the points bring up why Gale is better in terms of survival. But what about her emotional needs? Katniss has been to hell and back and now she's back in hell. Peeta has chased away her nightmares and made her feel safe. And Katniss' reaction when she found out Peeta had been taken to the Capitol? Just like her mother when her father died.
She's in love with Peeta.

No way.
How can anyone say Peeta lacks character? Sure, he’s led a pretty comfortable life compared to Gale, but that’s not his fault. He’s brave, strong, and is willing to throw himself in front of anything to save Katniss’ life.
I don’t see Gale doing that.
But I love Peeta, so maybe I’m a bit more than biased.

I’m sort of Team Neither guy. Not because I don’t think Katniss is worthy of Gale or Peeta; but the only relationship Peeta and Katniss have had has been surrounded by the Games. And the relationship Katniss and Gale have forged by desperation.
I guess you could say both relationships were forged by desperation.
Hm. I like both guys. Both are determined. Both are resourceful. I think whichever guy Katniss ends up with, she can’t go wrong.
Down with the Capitol!

I like Gale and all, but I think he should end up with Madge. He’s too much like Katniss, like a brother, to be with Katniss romantically.
And don’t underrate Peeta: strong, creative, charismatic, loyal, and loving. Loving in fact to the point where he would die for you. He may not be cut out for hunting or foraging, but Katniss can do all that for the both of them.

So, I generally read a book loving one specific character. If the book is worthy of my time, I read it again and find myself concentrating on the person that I prefer. THEN! If I read the book for a third time, I devote my time to finding positives about the character I don’t like.
For example:
I read the Hunger Games. Peeta was epic. I love Peeta.
I read it again! Peeta was even cooler but I noticed Gale a little more.
I read it once again. Gale is sort of creeping into my view even more. Is he the right boy for Kat?

Team Peeta on my end, as I said on Dear Author’s blog, what Gale & Katniss had has changed because of the Games.
There’s a part of Katniss that Gale wouldn’t be able to understand due to Katniss’ position as a Hunger Games survivor. Plus, Katniss’ reactions at the end of the books seem so genuine, compared to her overthinking her little love-triangle whenever she’s given the chance.

I think Peeta will become the President (more than once it has been mentioned what a good politician he is) and that Gale will end up dying for the cause. I think he has been becoming (understandably) bitter. Probably he and Peeta will have a scene where they confront each other and they will both agree to save Katniss. Not sure if Katniss will end up with Peeta (probably) or go off into the wilds and run District 13.
But, who knows??? Susan Collins is a marvelous writer and her Gregor the Underlander books (you haven’t read them yet? – this is a good way to spend the time until Mockingjay comes out!) were not predictable. Can’t wait for Mockinjay and can’t wait for her next series to emerge!

I cannot preoder Mockingjay, considering i have no money.
Something that does not appear fake to me is there relationship thru half of the first book, and then the second. although i thought that some of the things he did, and/or said in the first book indicated to me he was just playing the star-crossed Lover Boy role. but after the feast, and they started sharing stories in the cave really made me blush for Katniss. In the second, the way he approached the “Katniss is pregnant” ordeal and the way he presents himself around her, the respect he has for her, the kindness he is to her, just shows me that he is no harm to her.
But i will tell you, whenever i read the Hunger Games/ Catching Fire, I always reread passages in which Peeta and Katniss have a romantic moment.
my other choice would be that Katniss ends up with no one, that her plans of a no-marital life come to.
Gale would not be such a bad choice to me, if he had not kissed her and ruined everything in Catching Fire. i mean, i wouldnt mind if he kissed her, but not that time! not that specific time! it was all wrong. and then he threw the gloves at her feet… after that, the whipping, and it was very hard for me to feel bad for him.
Yes. this is how i feel
sorry its so long…

While I like Gale as a character I am in fact team Peeta. Gale and Katniss have been good friends and he does know her well, but just because Peeta wasn’t privileged with getting to spend every day with Katniss, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know her well. He has loved her for so long that he has paid attention to her very well. He knows Katniss just as well as Gale. Also I think that Katniss should be with Peeta because he is truely her other half. Where she is tough and harsh he is soft and charming. Her faults are balanced out by his strengths and he can take care of her just as well as Gale. Sure Peeta is no seasoned hunter but he is by no means weak. He has the intelligence and skills to survive and would do anything to protect Katniss. Also Gale is at heart a rebel, and while he does love Katniss, he wants to lead these big riots and be a loose canon. Gale will not always be there because he would choose war over staying with Katniss. He is very brave but I think that his desire to defeat the capitol is overpowering to all his other desires, even his desire to be with Katniss. The last reason why I think Katniss should be with Peeta is that I think that real reason why Katniss is turning to Gale now and not years ago is because he has always been her friend, and while she may have had some underlying feelings for him, I think she turns to him now because Gale represents her old comfortable life and how things used to be. But things aren’t going to be that way ever again so she should stop trying to hold on to the past and embrace the future. Peeta represents the future, a future she may not want to face but this fight against the capitol is something she started with him and something she must finish and move on from with him. He is the only one who will ever understand what she has gone through, because he went through it too. All in all I think that Peeta is right for Katniss, though Gale is a great guy too.
Also I do think Ben Barnes would make a good Gale.

Team Gale!

For all the reasons you listed & more. Katniss seems to light up around Gale, and share parts of herself she can’t trust to share with anyone else. She and Gale have a bond that is so deep, loving, and strong. I love that Gale is strong enough to appreciate and even encourage Katniss’ strengths, bringing out the best in each other. I do love Peeta too, but he’s definitely more of a friend. I think Katniss treads close to feeling obligated to him, and that sooo isn’t healthy. Sorry Peeta
And I don’t care geeky it sounds, I took the 24th off from work to read Mockingjay, I sure did

I am Team Katniss. Us girls can get along fine without all the male drama.
But if I had to choose, I would choose Gale. Peeta’s to whiny and goes off and makes big descisions about her without telling her
coughcoughlikewhenhejustdeclaredshewasPREGNANTcoughcough
and Gale is just epic in general

I’m Team Peeta. Yes, Katniss is really close to Gale and what they share is very important. However, I like to think of Gale as Katniss’ high school guy and Peeta as her college guy. Both are important to her and specifically to that stage of her life. The Games is not something that she can discuss with Gale whereas Peeta lived it with her. It’s kind of like Katniss and Peeta went through war together and war buddies are really special in a person’s life.

I have to agree about Gale. He’s so mysterious that I can’t help but want to learn more about him! We’ll have to see how things turn out.

I am so loving this Hunger Games promotion. I never would have found you site if not for the contests! Bonus. I will definitely be back in the future.
I do love the stickers also. I love both Peeta and Gale, but I gotta go with Peeta FTW. Katniss doesn’t need a provider. She can do that for herself. She needs someone who can love her unconditionally. For me, that’s Peeta.
I can’t wait for Mockingjay!!

I am totally Team Gale.
Why? Peeta’s a faker and a manipulator, and Katniss loves Gale more. I’m sure of it. Katniss and Peeta were not right for each other at all. Gale knows Katniss better, and he loves Katniss more. I can’t be sure, but I think Peeta is a spy for the Capitol. I might be wrong, though, but Gale is the best guy out here.

Every time I think about it it makes my head want to explode, so i’m hoping I’m not angry in the end when i tentatively say Gale at the moment. I was Peeta for the reread of Hunger Games, but I’m sloooowly changing my mind. But I can’t pick definitely because I know I’ll pick wrong, haha.

I am definitely team thank-goodness-I-don’t-have-to-choose. If forced, I’d go with Gale. I’d just feel so bad for poor Peeta.
Your casting choice for Gale = perfect, by the way! Mmm…

I can’t decide if I’m Team Peeta or Team Gale. I really like both of them for different reasons. I am just now reading these books. I finished Catching Fire in a late-night frenzy, and I will begin Mockingjay today. I’m virtually the last person I know to discover them; everyone I know was done with Mockingjay before I started The Hunger Games. Better late than never!
I see you’re reading Outlander right now. Is it your first time, or a re-read? I loved that book. I will be interested to see what you think of it.

Is there even a debate really? GALE.
If Peeta was portrayed in a movie they would have to find someone that looks like Chris from Family Guy. Because that is how I’ve always imagined him. Blonde. Pink. Soft. Boooooooooooring!
