This is the seventh book in the Anita Blake series. The premise is this: It’s modern day, and vampires are legal (i.e. you can’t just kill a vampire just ’cause you don’t like ‘em). Anita Blake is a necromancer (not to be confused with a necrophiliac), which means she has an “affinity” with the dead. She can raise zombies and has quite a bit of “power”.

I picked up this book after my failed attempt at reading Atonement. My next book is the His Dark Materials trilogy, and I wanted some fluff in between Atonement and His Dark Materials. The Anita Blake series is definitely fluff.

Unfortunately, I don’t know if I like where the series is headed. However, it’s been a great series so far, and it’s really non-stop action coupled with Anita Blake’s very sharp tongue. The action is so non-stop, that I’ve often wondered when this lady sleeps. I can suspend my disbelief about vampires and all that weird stuff, but when she has so much adventure that she never gets to sleep, I just start wondering how realistic this really is…

My only other complaint is that from the back of the book it seemed as if the book would revolve around some “thing” setting things on fire. Strangely, that seemed to be more of a side story rather than the main plot. It was irritating to be half way through the book and wonder when this arsonist was going to join the story. Oh well. That’s what I get for reading fluff.

I’ve indulged myself recently in a guilty pleasure (I always feel strange saying that in reference to this particular series because Guilty Pleasures is the name of the first book in this series): the next (for me) Anita Blake book. It’s called Burnt Offerings.

Briefly, this is what the Anita Blake (written by Laurell K. Hamilton) is about: Anita Blake is a necromancer (she can raise the dead (i.e. zombies)) and a vampire hunter. The novels take place in the present day under the pretext that vampirism is legal in the United States. At this point there’s 16 (as of June 2008) books in this series. So I’ve got plenty of guilty pleasures before I reach the end (I’m at number seven).

Anyway, on page 123, the three sentences after the fifth sentence says:

Vampires, for obvious reasons, didn’t pray a lot. I mean, who was going to answer? Oh yeah, there was the Church of Eternal Life, but they were more a humanist religion, sort of New Wavey.
